A New Site for Rhode Island Poets

He was crippled in a fall several years ago and suffered a stroke in 2023. Your support will help cover costs of this site and provide more frequent updates.

Rhode Island Poetry and Writing Groups.

The current Rhode Island State Poet Laureate is:
Tina Cane.
Tina grew up in New York City and attended the University of Vermont. She is the founder and director of Writers-in- the-Schools, RI, for which she works as a visiting poet, and is also an instructor with the writing community, Frequency Providence. Over the past twenty years, Tina has taught French, English, and creative writ-ing in public and private schools throughout New York City and Rhode Island. The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts supports artists and art and writing groups of all genres in Rhode Island. For grant information and a list of programs, please see the link above.

The Rhode Island Poetry Loft is a group of poets in Central Rhode Island. The group seeks to provide support for all Rhode Island poets, and all are welcomed. The group provides workshops, critique groups and information on publishing. More information can be found at the site above.

For the past several years, thousands of Rhode Island high school students have participated in the Poetry Out Loud State recitation competitions, sponsored by the Rhode Island Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Your high school is invited to participate!
Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful program for students. The program helps the develop Stage and speaking skills, confidence and a love of poetry. Poetry really needs to be spoken to truly be enjoyed. Poetry Out Loud is a great program for students. To learn how to get your school involved in the competition, please see the link above.

Poetry Slams are events in which adults and students read and perform poetry for awards and prizes. There are many local events and even a National competition. Check with your local poetry group for the nearest Slam event and Slam schedules. The above link is for The Providence poetry slam, one of many in the State. I think you will find it very interesting.

Rhode Island Romance Writers welcomes all romance writers of all genres. Membership dues are $30.00 per year. Currently, a number of their events are being held online, via Zoom. Normally they meet from September to June on the first Saturday of the month in the Hayden Center at the Cumberland Public Library , 1464 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, RI 02864. Goat Hill Writers supports Rhode Island writers working in all genres. They sponsor a student fiction contest, and provide seminars, readings and critique groups for writers. The group welcomes all Rhode Island writers. Please see link above for more information.

About the author: Steven Robert Heine is an American poet and author. He has spent much of his life supporting poetry projects and events. He is the author of 8 volumes of poetry. In 2011 he was seriously injured in a fall that left him in great pain and almost unable to walk. He suffered a stroke in 2023. Heine receives no disability and relies on a small pension and retirement income. He is no longer able to make public appearances.

Heine has spent his life promoting poetry; serving as founder for many poetry contests. He is the author of fifteen books, including poetry, history and his own short auto-biographies.
